Are British home owners too trusting?

With crime in the headlines every day of the year, it may come as a surprise to learn that a third of people in the UK will leave a window open when they’ve gone out.

A study of 10 years worth of claims by insurance company Aviva showed that different types of crimes were seasonally affected, with domestic burglaries rising during the winter months. More than 650,000 burglaries were reported during 2016, and many could have been prevented had householders followed just a few common-sense security tips.

Lock up securely

According to a study commissioned by Canary, a smart home security firm, nearly one fifth of homeowners said they had been burgled at some point in their lives. The simple act of closing and locking windows and doors before going out can make a difference. Make sure keys are not left in view or in the keyhole – thieves can access keys through letterboxes if they’re within reach. Don’t think they’ll miss keys that are hidden outside, either. It doesn’t matter how well concealed they are; it still makes you vulnerable. If you’ve ever lost your keys, change the locks, and take the opportunity to install a lock that bears the BSI kitemark.

When replacing doors and windows, make sure you find a reputable firm that can provide secure locking systems with their product. If you’re looking for windows and doors in Dublin, firms like keane windows will be able to help meet your security needs.

Don’t advertise that you’re out

We think nothing these days of sharing our holiday experiences on social media while we’re away. It doesn’t take much for a thief to get wind of the fact that your house has been left unattended. If you are going to be away for a while, don’t leave your house in darkness. Automated lights that come on and go off at various points in the evenings make a good deterrent. Speaking of lights, a good security light at the front and back of your property that is sensitive to heat will also help put burglars off.

Home Security

To keep your home safe, it’s advisable to invest in a home security system, which can range from a basic alarm system to a sophisticated monitoring system that you can communicate with from anywhere on the globe.
